Sankofa -name taken from the typeface- is an ode to African writing systems. About their (hi)story, the birth of writing, their origins, names, main features and the Adinkra symbols (main reference for the creation of the typeface Sankofa)…
The texts are extract from Afrikan Alphabets by Saki Mafundikmwa but also lectures from different specialist and scholars such as Theophil Obenga, Kalala Omotunde or Pr. Dibombari. This publication is also a space to display, show the concept(ion) and the specimen in use from the typeface Sankofa, that I created in relation to this project. The publication has been designed and thought as a whole inorder to communicate the notions of greatness, elevation, expressivity and vibration, really important in African writing systems.
The aim of this publication is to give back its letter of nobility to African writing systems.
