Sankofa ypeface
Type design
Pattern design

The typeface Sankofa is based
on African writing systems.
This typeface was created using different shapes and elements
from the Adinkra Symbols, the
Latin alphabet, pictures of the Lagunes District in Ivory Coast,
and art pieces from the Akan people. To conceive this typeface,
I focused on one particular African writing system: the Adinkra Symbols, in relation to my own ethnic background.
The intention behind this typeface is to put forward this particular writing system, but also to create
a new typographic language based on the African creative heritage.
I wanted this typeface to communicate the notions of vibration, harmony, and graphic expressivity; keys of African writing systems. Following this idea of expressivity, the plasticity of the letter comes here in first position, before the legible—letting the letter expresses itself without the need
of a meaning. The story, the atmosphere, the emotion is in
the shape of the letter itself, its meaning is in its visuality, in relation to the notion of ‘artistic emotion’.

The type specimen is composed of 3 scarves, representing the words pride, heritage and re-discovery.
